Christianity was introduced to Cyprus in 45 CE by Paul the Apostle. The Apostles founded the Church of Cyprus, making it one of the oldest independent churches in the world. The Orthodox Church of Cyprus has been the dominant religious institution for centuries. Almost all Greek Cypriots embrace Orthodoxy as an element of national belonging, even if they do not practice the religion regularly
LANGUAGE
The official language of Cyprus is Greek, however, a dialect is spoken which combines and blends sounds, words, and idioms from other languages and dialects, even though Greeks -Achaean Greeks – inhabited the island and brought the Greek language to Cyprus. Due to the fact that the island has a great geographical position and in the ancient world it used to be the largest producer and exporter of copper, it was conquered by Turks, Brits, Francs, and Venetians. This has not just affected the social and economic life of the island but also the language as even nowadays there are many words, expressions, and phrases in use originating from all these nations’ languages
